Pilot’s notes
Before intercoms, the earcups housed the mouths of Gosport tubes — plain rubber hose that carried the instructor’s voice forward to the student, one way only, with no way to answer back. Snug leather over the ears cut the wind noise and held the goggles in place, the whole rig built for a cockpit open to a hundred-mile-an-hour breeze.

One-way voice
The student could hear the instructor but never reply — a nod, or a waggle of the stick, was the only answer the tube allowed back.
